Remuh Synagogue
Krakow - Poland

Remuh Synagogue

This synagogue dates back to the 16th century, 1553 to be precise, and is the smallest in Krakow. It was built by the family of the Polish rabbi Moses Isserles, which unfortunately was almost completely destroyed during the Nazi occupation. Only a dozen gravestones survived the Second World War in their original state and among them was that of Rabbi Moses Isserles.During the period of Nazi occupation, between 1939 and 1945, the synagogue served as a warehouse for body bags and fire-fighting equipment, but unfortunately it suffered severe damage and was subsequently renovated in 1957 by the Jewish religious community.Today, the cemetery and synagogue are a place of pilgrimage for devout Jews from all over the world.
