In January 1881, the New York Times and newspapers around the world ran a headline: “Istanbul photographer Onnik Efendi, who fell in love with the Carmen puppet of the famous English puppeteer Thomas Holden, was caught red-handed with the Carmen puppet he had smuggled.” Forty years passed, and a new piece of news arrived. This news filled in the missing piece of the photograph. “The famous English puppeteer Thomas Holden burned himself and the Carmen puppet in his garden, killing Holden.” This true event forms the basis of the play Carmen. So, what happened during this process, the historical background, and all these intertwined lives? The play seeks an answer to this question. It touches upon the characters’ actions, emotions, and wounds.

Theme of the Game
World-renowned English puppeteer Thomas Holden was in Beyoğlu in January 1881 with his play Carmen. The puppets were life-sized and very lifelike. The Carmen puppet in particular... Indeed, word spread throughout the city that Carmen was not a puppet but a real woman. Photographer Onnik Efendi fell in love with Carmen. On the one hand, it was the eve of the declaration of the Constitutional Monarchy, and on the other, a love affair began, leaving you unsure of which side you were on. The twin theater actors Yartev and Vartev are companions throughout this story. Their mischievousness drew this love affair into a historical debate while also showcasing their mastery of humor.
